By examining the ideas of specific personalities of Russian culture and literature, this paper aims to offer an original perspective of the well-known dispute between slavophiles and westernizers, usually deemed as the axis of the Russian intellectual debate in the 19th century. The selection of such personalities — Pavel Pestel (1793-1826), Alexander Herzen (1812-1870) e Feodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) — has privileged the diversity of points of view and, thus, allows a glimpse more of nuances than of dichotomies. We intend to examine how the future of Russia faced with an inherent geographic and cultural crossroads is shaped in the thoughts of Herzen and Dostoevsky. Pestel makes us go back in time to disclose how this 19th century dispute has emerged from a previous background debate.
