This article presents and introduces an articulation between the main translations of Vladimir Mayakovsky’s lyrical long poem Cloud in Trousers (1915) to French, published from 1947 to 2011. This study aims at showcasing how the powerful images of the Mayakovskian poetry tend to erase the fundamental sound aspects of his poetics, which resulted in prosaic translations, poor in rhythm and sonority. Nevertheless, such phenomenon has not had a negative impact in his reception through time, since he is one of the most popular Russian poets in France, probably due to the gigantism of his historical personality to the French public.
