This article aims to study the chapter VII of the book Psychology of Art (1925), by Lev Vigotski, where the author analyzes the short story “Soft Breathing” (1916) by Ivan Búnin. In it, we discriminate different analytical approaches used in order to understand the central phenomenon of the author's work: the aesthetic reaction. We seek to understand these approaches from the point of view of some stylistic theorists, observing the agreements and disagreements in relation to the fundamental objectives of each one’s analytical procedures. With this study, we will propose some reflections on the compositional realization of the text. Finally, we will briefly analyze Ivan Bunin’s short story, considering Vigotsky’s methodology as a starting point, and advancing in certain points of his analysis from the point of view of the understanding of the text according to Leo Spitzer.
