The Fall of the House of Usher, gothic spatiality, and Jess Franco’s film adaptation

This paper intends to present the partial results of an M.A. research project which aims at analyzing the Spanish director Jess Franco’s film adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's tale “The Fall of the House of Usher”, titled Neurosis - The Fall of the House of Usher (1987), in relation to Gothic spatiality. As theoretical framework, this paper refers to studies by Linda Hutcheon (2013) and Robert Stam (2006, 2009) regarding adaptation theory. It also refers to works from Aparecido Donizete Rossi (2008), Fred Botting (2005) and David Punter (2012) in relation to the Gothic. Furthermore, it observes works from Gérard Genette (1982) and Julia Kristeva (2005 [1966]) related to vis-à-vis intertextuality. Finally, it resorts to critical essays on Poe's works in general, and on the tale and the film here addressed.
