Abstract

The aim of this study was to perform a critical analysis of guidelines for the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of protocols in the health area, pointing out the linguistic and cultural aspects in the adaptation of a protocol for the identification of childhood apraxia of speech. The translation process was performed based on Beaton et al. (2000) guidelines, with changes: (1) Translation; (2) Synthesis of The Translations; (3) Back Translation; (4) Expert Committee; (5) Final review. All the linguistic and cultural aspects were adapted in the translation and the items classified as having equivalence problems were changed, aiming to achieve the best adaptation possible. We conclude that the text's purpose and target audience are very important and must be considered in the process, and that the translator’s experience is one of the key points to the quality of the translation.
