Sound translation: phonetic perspectives in translation and the Humpty Dumpty case

This article presents a brief bibliographical study and a commented experiment on sound translation, a topic that is still overlooked in translation studies in Brazil. Sound translation may be observed in some poems and songs and is strongly based on repetition or adaptation of the source-text acoustics, which may or may not take into account other linguistic systems, such as semantics and lexicon. The theoretical framework on concepts, criticisms, and examples that surround the theme (Catford, 1965; Venuti, 1995; Pilshchikov, 2016; Dembeck, 2015; Hilson, 2013; etc.) highlights the literary value of sound translation that, although there is no unanimous recognition that sound translation is in fact a translation, the studies here presented show discussions based on a political and cultural perspective that recognize it as legitimate. The translation experiment was inspired by the sound translation of the English nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty (1797), by Mother Goose, into French, by van Rooten. This translation is quite controversial among researchers as it is an extreme case of sound translation, generating a text devoid of meaning. The purely sound translation of the English song into Brazilian Portuguese provided means to observe the various acoustic systems raised in the theoretical section and the limitations of the target language to repeat some sounds of the source language. This study argues that sound translation highlights phonetics as an identity element of the source culture.
