Abstract

Newspapers were a key factor in the democratization of the access to literature, both in the production and reception of literary discourse. Mostly through newspapers, periodical press permitted a dialogue between journalism and literature. In colonial settings, it also enabled the itineration of periodical press production to peripheral locations, giving new opportunities for writing and reading. Through the comparative analysis of the works and biographies, we try to understand how newspapers democratized literature and which their limitations in this process they present.
