The objective of this study is showing José de Alencar’s journalistic performance in Rio de Janeiro press, between 1854 and 1856, in the field of theatrical criticism and dramaturgy, original functions of the publishing space known as “feuilleton”, section in down page where he published his texts. For that, it may be analyzed the author’s considerations regarding the creation of a theater with “local color” and his play O Rio de Janeiro às direitas e às avessas, which opened space for an innovative debate on the construction of Brazilian theater. This perspective will be studied according to the concepts of “porosity”, “literary matrix of the press” and “media matrix” (Thérenty, 2007).
