Abstract

This is a hermeneutic study, with a phenomenological description of "Esquema de Machado de Assis", of the way Antonio Candido read Machado. As we delve into the ins and outs of the Candido's text and scrutinize the interpretive perspectives that it harvests in map of the critical fortune of then, we are confronted by his attempt to emerge from the undergrounds of writing a critical treatment of the Brazilian social relations that the writer would have hidden in the occult universe of his prose. The contribution of Candido, reader of Machado, is, however, much greater than that of presenting his own interpretation, because by catching in his critics a variety of ways of interpreting, he extended the possibilities of hermeneutical mirrors provoked by Machado, increasingly multifaceted by different ways in which it is read.
