A melancolia traduz singularidades histórico-culturais de portugueses e brasileiros. Em Sermões de Vieira, traduz-se por uma "errância mental e física", sinal da negatividade do espírito português, preso a um tempo estagnado e resistente ao brilho alheio. Em Contos de Machado de Assis, personagens inertes e invejosas manifestam tanto a inconstância da moral como a fixidez do tempo melancólico.
