Abstract

In this article I analyse Monção (1963) by Vimala Devi as a short-story cycle, a genre that differs as much from the traditional novel as from non-itegrated collections of short narratives. It is this generic affiliation, I argue, that makes possible Devi's particular portrait of late-colonial Goa. Drawing on various theorizations of the short-story cycle genre, I scrutinize the interconnections and breaks present in Monção and conclude that the oscillation between centripetal and centrifugal forces is what enables the representation of a society united by its divisions.
