Polyphony as the literary device that, through world effects, gives stage to the multiple voices of a world-system. On the other side, an authoritarian and monological ideology, covered and dissimulated by utopian aspirations, dictating or orchestrating this polyphony: Riobaldo. We will show how this sagacious and charismatic patriarch, at the same
time a dubious and digressive narrator, tell us the story of the advance of the civilization over the Sertão, emphasizing poetically what is epic in it and hiding rhetorically what is prosaic in that so ordinary history of the modern world: the assimilation of a peripheral zone in conflict (meaning, unproductive) to the world-system.
