Resistance in exile: Democratic Portugal in the voice of its collaborators

The Portugal Democrático newspaper was created in São Paulo in 1956 by a group of Portuguese exiles in Brazil with the aim of fighting the Salazar dictatorship. The periodical circulated until 1975, a year after the Carnation Revolution ended the Portuguese New State. It seeks to present the newspaper's history, not only through its headlines and articles, but also through the discourse of its producers. The journal brought together, in its pages, intellectuals, politicians, artists and lawyers from different political strands, such as republicans, socialists and mainly communists. Their testimonies resize the newspaper's history and its role in the fight overseas against fascism in Portugal.
