Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to articulate two distinct poetic moments based on two common motifs: the female voice and the letter as a device for filiation. The two poetic moments are those represented by the New Portuguese Letters by Maria Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta and Maria Velho da Costa, and the book The Poet of Pondichéry, by Adília Lopes. The letter will then be considered as a replacement procedure for the presence and the voice, movement which is even more pertinent when one adds to the scene the claim of a “feminine voice” linked to this procedure.
