Abstract

Cited as a model by Lusophone African writers, Jorge Amado, according to Tania Macêdo, “has acted as a catalyst for African writers” “by affirming Brazilian uniqueness and reporting local inequalities” (Macêdo, 2008: 145, versão minha para o inglês). Following this idea, this article aims to indicate possible aesthetic, thematic and political reasons for this reverence to the Bahian writer in Africa, showing some reverberations of his style in Luandino Vieira's novel The real life of Domingos Xavier (1961) and its film adaptation Sambizanga (1972), by Sarah Maldoror.
