The purpose of literature review was to better understand the working organization and the working processes of nursing staffs, identifying the main risk factors associated with the back pain in these professional, and analysing various prevention strategies described by the other authors. For this purpose, mainly Brazilian papers were reviewed, which considered the reality of the nursing profession in our country. The professional caracterization indicated that the majority were females of low social economic status and have two jobs. The main risk factors associated with pain were divided into ergonomic and traumatic ones. The traumatic factor was subdivided into both individuals and professionals. Related to the prevention measures, it was observed that most studies priorized the postural and ergonomic orientations, in addition to those related to the physical activities. Finally, it is important to point out that the working organizations and processes of these professionals, as well as the risk factors associated with the occurence of pain, were studied in detail. With respect to the prevention measures, it appears important to direct them to various professional courses and work sectors. Considering the high incidence of pain among nursing professionals, other studies that focus on the prevention of pain should be carried with objective of improving their quality of life and work conditions.
