Abstract

Lateral asymmetry is one of the fields of study in laterality, which corresponds to the superiority in performing activities with one side of the body. Lateral asymmetry can be divided into preference asymmetry and performance asymmetry. Objective: To compare manual grip strength asymmetry between weightlifters and non-weightlifters, and to understand the relationship between weightlifting practice and asymmetry in the upper limbs. Method: This study evaluated 50 individuals of both sexes, aged between 18 and 35 years. The participants were divided into 2 groups (weightlifters and non-weightlifters). The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory was used to determine the participants' laterality. An analog manual dynamometer was used to measure the subjects' manual grip strength. The task consisted of performing a manual grip strength movement with the dynamometer device following the recommendations of the American Society of Hand Therapists. Results: Differences were found between weightlifter and non-weightlifter groups in the performance of the Left Hand (p <0.02). In the comparison between hands of the same group, no statistically significant differences were identified in weightlifter (p= 1.000), while a statistically significant difference was found in non-weightlifter (p <0.001). Conclusion: According to the results found in this study, it can be speculated that weightlifting practice may cause a reduction in the difference of manual grip strength performance between the upper limbs, thereby decreasing the asymmetries between the right and left limbs.
