Abstract

One of the main difficulties in adopting the Life Cycle Assessment of buildings (ACVbd) is collecting, storing and structuring data to carry out the environmental calculation and subsequent visualization of the results. IoT has the potential to bring greater precision to data collection for LCA. IoT systems must be designed with best practices for scalability, interoperability, and composability to achieve this. A structural model can provide fundamental building blocks for this integration. The main objective of this research is to propose a structural model for integrating IoT and LCA, explaining alternative approaches and technological standards that enable support for LCA through IoT. To this end, the structuralist method was applied with the following design: identification of the elements for integration based on a Systematic Literature Review of integrative proposals for these themes, conceptualization, establishment of relationships between the elements, elaboration of the structural model and analysis. The elements were classified into 12 categories that approximate the themes: framework, product, collect, communication, data, storage, service, application, goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory, life cycle impact assessment and interpretation. The model can be used by agents interested in mediating LCA with IoT, providing them with a general understanding of integration alternatives depending on the scope of technology assessment and development. Furthermore, the developed model can benchmark works related to the topic or implementation alternatives.
