In the last 25 years, national systems of higher education have experienced a significant process of institutional expansion and diversification that has been widely addressed by the social sciences. Recent advances in access to secondary education have promoted the growth of the population eligible for higher education, a process that has been accompanied by a relevant set of changes in institutional organization and in the structure of opportunities that has been presented to younger cohorts of students who reach the most advanced educational levels. Current research has documented the transformations that have occurred in the field of higher education in numerous dimensions. This is a diverse literature interested in highlighting the characteristics of institutional changes in this expanding system, the object of intense social struggles.
