Abstract

Baroque man, homo religiosus. Our proposal in this paper is to prove that it is not possible to make a thorough historical analysis of this man and his society without making use of Sciences of Religions. We'll start remembering the importance of the Religionswissenschaften to the French scholars that developed the so called "history of mentalities". Afterwards, we'll criticize three of the main canons of the historiography of Colonial Minas: the historical meanings of the laical fraternities and baroque festivals, the "exteriority" of the baroque religiosity, and the religious syncretism in Minas in the XVIII century.
