Résumé

The main goal of this article is to trace the ways followed by the Greeks in building up their own identity. The Author assumes that ethnicity is very much a matter of internal perceptions and that the ethnic group is defined not by the sum of objectively observable differences but only by those differences that members themselves regard as significant. The role of Herodotus in this construct is stressed by the Author.
