Abstract

Much of the literary production of Cassandra Rios, very popular in the 1960s and 1970s, is devoted to the description of female homosexual relationships. The feeling of inadequacy present in these novels is associated with the search for an identity and a greater understanding of what it is to be a lesbian. This paper aims to show how Cassandra Rios represents and gives visibility to a "being at the margin". We also seek to show that, as the author tries to build a lesbian "identity", she discusses some key issues that would become central to queer theory as the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity and the notion of performativity.
