Novas cartas portuguesas: the vagina dentata of the Three Marias

When, in 1972, the Three Marias published New Portuguese Letters, this event makes a true “shockwave”, due to the theme running throughout the book: ‘intimate (sexual life) of women’ (Lamas, 1974). Thus, a few years later, M. Pintasilgo states that there is “an excess that does not fit into normality [and that] lies in the fact that the boundaries between eroticism and pornography are exceeded”. We propose to explore the transgressive aspect of the work, attempting to break with the dominant conventions of representation in eroticism or pornography, that is, the passage from the “ob/scene” (obscene) to the on/scene of sexuality feminine. The other transgression will be the concrete description of the female body, the most intimate parts of the female anatomy: her sex – a new territory to be seen and explored by women.
